František Kupka – Man and Earth (L'Homme et la Terre)
The collection of 106 drawings by František Kupka created for the encyclopaedia Man and Earth, published in France from 1904–1907, will be presented in an extraordinary way from 12th–24th October in the KODL Gallery. The entire collection will then be auctioned as one item at our 86th Auction on 28th November. “The encyclopaedia Man and Earth, through text, maps, various drawings, photographs and, last but not least, Kupka’s illustrations, critically summarises the history of mankind from prehistory to the present. This set, whose provenance dates back to the famous collections of Jindřich Waldes, was created as an illustration to the extensive six-volume encyclopaedia of the geographer Élisée Reclus. The collection is presented in a fairly utmost completeness and is undoubtedly the most extensive and comprehensive work of illustration by František Kupka from the beginning of the 20th century.” František Kupka (1871–1957)Man and Earth (set of 106 illustrations)mixed media (pencil, pen, ink, gouache) on paper, 1904–1905 / 1907.
